An uncommon large original doubleweight Benjamin of Paris 9.5 x 12 inch (16 x 21 cm) photograph of the renowned French pianist, composer and pedagogue of Hungarian birth. Inscribed to the lower mount in 1929 to Prof. William Wolf, of the Wolf Institute of Music, Lancaster PA. Together with a complementary portrait from the same session, unsigned. Lower left corner of inscribed mount perished, with small stains and some wear to upper left edge, neither affecting the inscription or signature and otherwise both fine. Mat: 12.25 x 9. 25 inches (31 x 24 cm).
A student of Georges Mathias (a Chopin student) and of Saint-Saens, he impressed Liszt, Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky with his playing and was celebrated for his beautiful touch and immaculate technique. A renowned teacher, his students included Nikita Magaloff, Guiomar Novaes, Jean Francaix, Yvonne Loriod, Beveridge Webster, Aaron Copland and many others!
