Pair of autograph musical quotations from the father and son composer and choir conductors. The first is an autograph manuscript hymn quotation from the American songwriter George F. Root who found particular fame during the Civil War with songs such as "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!" and "The Battle Cry of Freedom" and who is regarded as the first American to compose a secular cantata. Root has penned three measures of the still popular hymn "The Shining Shore"  penned in purple ink, signed and dated "George F. Root / Warren, O[hio], July 1877."  Together with a detailed passage marked "Be careful of the fingering!" signed and inscribed by his son, Frederick W. Root, himself a  composer, choir conductor, organist, adjudicator and music teacher.  Each on album sheets measuring 19.5 x 12 cm and in fine condition.
