Kraus, Lili. (1903–1986). Signed Photograph.
Unusual signed post-concert snapshot in color of the Hungarian-born, Vienna-trained pianist with a small bouquet in her hands. Inscribed to Paul McMahon, dated November 21, 1968. 7 x 5 inches (17.7 x 12.7 cm). Colors somewhat faded, else fine.
Musicians driven from their homeland often have a "restless" biography, but the case of Lili Kraus is extreme. She consecutively resided in Hungary, Austria, Germany (until 1932), Italy, England, the Netherlands (until 1940) and went on a world tour that ended with internment in a Japanese concentration camp in what is now Indonesia. After her release in 1945, she lived in Australia (obtaining New Zealand citizenship), France, Austria and finally, after further tours to other continents including South America, with her daughter in Asheville, N.C. Kraus was best known as a Mozart specialist.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
