Ball, Lucille. (1910–1989) [Bull, Clarence Sinclair. (1896–1979)] . Signed Photograph.

Exceptional signed promotional black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin photograph of the American actress, comedian, and producer, likely by Clarence Bull for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Signed with her name alone in blue ballpoint ink. 10.25 x 8 inches (26 x 20.3 cm).  A few minor scratches and wrinkles, overall in fine condition.

After rising from showgirl to bit player to leading lady in B-films to star at RKO, Lucille Ball left in 1942 and came to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and was an MGM artist from 1943 to 1946; the photograph likely dates from that time.  While at MGM she posed for a number of stunning portraits, including this one. Though there is no blurb nor photographer's stamp, this is likely the work of Clarence Bull, one of the great masters of the Hollywood portrait and head of the stills department at MGM for over thirty years.

Though MGM featured her and her spectacular looks in a few musicals, they were not sure what to do with her and Ball moved on just a few years later. She later wrote history with the Desilu company, which she founded in 1950 together with her then husband, Desi Arnaz, for the TV sitcom I Love Lucy, in which the real-life husband and wife starred as a alongside each other as a married couple. After her divorce from Arnaz, Ball bought his share in the company and became the first sole female owner of a production company in Hollywood.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
