Horne, Marilyn. (b. 1934). Signed Photograph in "Carmen".

Signed promotional portrait of the American mezzo-soprano performing as Carmen in Bizet's opera of the same name.  By Colbert-LaBerge Concert Management, New York.  Inscribed to Paul McMahon.  Label identifying the role mounted to verso. 10 x 8 inches (25.3 x 20.6 cm).  Light wear to edges, else in fine condition. 

Her first major breakthrough came when her singing ability was recognized by Igor Stravinsky; he invited her to perform in the 1956 Venice festival.  In 1960, she returned to the United States to appear in Wozzeck at the San Francisco Opera.  Horne made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1970 as Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma with Joan Sutherland in the title role. 

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
