Nureyev, Rudolf. (1938–1993) & Arova, Sonia. (1927–2001). Signed Photograph.

Original 1962 photograph by Nancy Sorensen of a pas de deux at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Chicago Opera Ballet) in an unidentified ballet, inscribed to McMahon by both, with Nureyev's signature in Cyrillic.  Handstamp of Lyric Opera of Chicago and penciled note, "Rudolf Nureyev and Sonia Arova in Ballet Gala" to verso.  Oblong format, 8 x 10 inches (20.4 x 25.4 cm).  In fine condition.

Bulgarian-born Arova worked as a principal ballerina in the Original Ballets Russes, the London Festival Ballet, the Royal Ballet, the National Ballet of Washington, D.C., and the American Ballet Theatre.  She danced with Rudolf Nureyev in their American debut with Ruth Page's Chicago Opera Ballet troupe in New York City (1962).

Nureyev and Arova appeared together in Chicago on several occasions in October 1962 (even within an opera—Borodin's Prince Igor).  

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
