Ormandy, Eugene. (1899–1985). Signed Portrait.

Signed photographic reproduction of a drawn portrait of the Hungarian-born American conductor.  Inscribed to Paul McMahon, dated 1962.  Handstamp, "Eugene Ormandy / Conductor / The Philadelphia Orchestra" to verso. 10 x 8 inches (25.6 x 20.6 cm).  In fine condition.

Ormandy became a legend as the music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra.  His 44-year association with the orchestra is one of the longest enjoyed by any conductor with any American orchestra.  Ormandy made numerous recordings with the orchestra, and as guest conductor with European orchestras, and achieved three gold records and two Grammy Awards.  His reputation was as a skilled technician and expert orchestral builder. 

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
