AMQS on a card by the American composer, conductor and educator, consisting of the first measure his "Violin Sonata No. III," notated on one hand-drawn staff. Inscribed, "For Benny Andrews / Otto Luening." No date. 3 x 5 inches (7.7 x 12.7 cm). In excellent condition.
Born in Milwaukee to German parents and educated in Germany, Luening returned to the U.S. after the First World War and, from 1925 to the 1970s, was affiliated with a variety of U.S. schools of the first rank, including Eastman, Columbia and Juilliard, as a composition teacher and conductor. His Third Violin Sonata dates from 1943–51.
