Lees, Benjamin. (1924–2010). Autograph musical quotation signed.

AMQS by the American composer: Symphony No. 3, beginning of Interlude 1, four and a half measures.  Two connected staves, upper marked "Tenor Sax" and lower "Temple Blocks".  Signed and dated, "June 1979."  Sheet torn and cut from a 12-staff pad.  5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.5 cm).  Some creases; overall in very good condition.

"In 1954 Lees received a Guggenheim Fellowship allowing him to work in Europe.  His aim was to remain uninfluenced by the turbulent American scene and to create his own style.  He worked away from the academic centres where many American composers had studied, living at Longpont-sur-Orge, France (1954–5 and 1957–61), Vienna (1955–6) and Helsinki (1956–7).  He returned to the USA in 1961 with many mature and impressive works, thereafter dividing his time between composition and teaching, at the Peabody Conservatory (1962–41966–8) and in New York at Queens College (1964–6), the Manhattan School (1972–4) and the Juilliard School (1976–7)."  Niall O’Loughlin in Grove Music Online
