Hopkins, Claude. (1903–1984). Two 1930s Photographs.
Two photographs of the stride pianist and bandleader.

Sepia studio portrait in a light suit, seated. Inscription, "Best wishes, Claude Hopkins" in negative.  Manuscript notes to verso, "Chestnut St. Ballroom HBG," "Roseland Ball Room '31" and "Piano," all in different hands.   7 x 5 inches (17.7 x 12.5 cm).  Punch holes from earlier binding to left edge; some wear; else in very good condition.  The notes to verso seem to be contradictory, but a date of 1931 would be plausible. The Roseland Ballroom was in New York City's Theater District.

Postcard of Hopkins with his band on stage.  By Management Rockwell-O'Keefe Inc., Radio City, N.Y. / Hollywood, Cal.  Manuscript notes to verso, "Compliments of Ben Smith," "Floyd Brady / 1st trombone / Claude Hopkins / NYC / Orch/ 5/24/37."  Oblong format, 3.5 x 5.5 inches (8 x 14 cm).  Somewhat worn and soiled to verso, else in very good condition.

Management Rockwell-O'Keefe existed under this name from 1931 to 1939.  Trombonist Floyd "Stumpy" Brady lived from 1910 to 1998.
