A student of Manuel García the elder, Nourrit became one of the leading French tenors of his time. He was closely associated with Rossini and Meyerbeer. In his later years he was the first singer to introduce Schubert's Lieder to Paris, and he wrote many ballet librettos, including the one for La Sylphide.
