Between 1905 and 1923, Marthe Chenal was one of the most sought-after operatic sopranos in France and also one of the most adored women in Paris.  She participated in various world premieres, including La sorcière (1912) by Camille Erlanger (1863–1919), whose music seemed particularly close to her.
