[Music Man] Preston, Robert. (1918-1987). Signed Photograph as Harold Hill.
Signed period photograph of the American stage and film actor and singer of Broadway and cinema, best known for his collaboration with composer Meredith Willson and for originating the role of Professor Harold Hill in the 1957 musical The Music Man and the 1962 film adaptation. Original doubleweight photograph with his "Prof. Harold Hill" suitcase, boldly signed and inscribed "To Paul / All my Best / Robert Preston."  Small abrasion and pinhole to upper right corner, else in fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.7 x 25.5 cm).

The 1957 show won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for 1,375 performances. The cast album won the first Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and spent 245 weeks on the Billboard charts. The show's success led to revivals, including a long-running 2000 Broadway revival, a popular 1962 film adaptation, a 2003 television adaptation, and most recently a critically acclaimed run on Broadway in 2022-23. 

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
