Newman, Paul. (1925–2008). Signed Photograph in "Sweet Bird of Youth".
An ideal early and uninscribed signed 1962 promotional photograph of the iconic American actor and philanthropist, who has signed with his name alone in bold black ink "Paul Newman." Slight wear to edges, overall in very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).
Newman is shown posed with hands on his hips and shirt unbuttoned for his role in the 1962 drama film also starring Geraldine Page, Shirley Knight, Madeleine Sherwood, Ed Begley, Rip Torn and Mildred Dunnock. Based on the 1959 play of the same name by Tennessee Williams, it focuses on the relationship between a drifter and a faded movie star. The film was adapted and directed by Richard Brooks.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
