[Ravel, Maurice. (1875–1937)] Bardac, Raoul. (1881–1950). Signed copy of "Horizons / 23 recueil" inscribed to Maurice Ravel. Paris: E. Demets. 1912.

Second installment of the cycle by the French composer for piano, consisting of three pieces: IV. "Au Soir Tombant"; V. "Les Feuilles"; VI. "La Neige."  Unbound upright folio.  In original wrappers.  Lithographed after plates.  [PN] E. 1679 D. ("Au Soir Tombant"), E. 1680 D. ("Les Feuilles"), and E. 1681 D. ("La Neige").  15 pp.  A most intriguing copy, inscribed to title (translated from the French), "To Maurice Ravel in witness of former friendship and lasting camaraderie, sincerely, Raoul Bardac 11-12 [=December 11?]."  13.75 x 10.75 inches (35 x 27.5 cm).  Bumped to foot of spine; upper wrapper frayed to outer edge; somewhat foxed; else in very good condition.

Bardac, son of Emma Bardac (1862–1934), had introduced his mother to his teacher, Claude Debussy, who soon began an affair and later married her.  "Former friendship" may refer to the fact that Ravel took sides with Debussy's first wife, Lily.  Still, Bardac and Ravel did not fall out completely, which is proven not only by the (private) inscription but also by the printed dedication of No. IV of the present cycle, "Au soir tombant," to Ravel.
