Although he evolved into a cult figure, and although he will be recollected as the proto-hippie, the consummate street-poet-musician of his day, Moondog will also be remembered as a serious musician and composer as well as a quaint versifier whose work evolved steadily through the apparent chaos of his life. Blind since age 16, he arrived in New York in \u003cspan class=\"date\" style=\"\"\u003e1943\u003c\/span\u003e on a Greyhound bus with very little beyond a strong sense of survival. By the early 1960s he had become probably the most photographed street figure of his time. In \u003cspan class=\"date\" style=\"\"\u003e1974\u003c\/span\u003e he made the second great leap of his life, Moondog finally became the “European in exile” he had often called himself, living in northwest Germany until his death in \u003cspan class=\"date\" style=\"\"\u003e1999\u003c\/span\u003e.
