Other than Rossini, Verdi, or Puccini, Müller is regarded as the most prolific opera composer of all time with his 166 operas. The "Zauberspiel" (magical play) by Ferdinand Raimund (1790–1836) with music by Müller was first performed in Vienna, at the Theater in der Josefstadt, on October 17, 1828. Both Raimund and Müller were household names in Vienna's theatrical scene of their time. Der Alpenkönig und der Menschenfeind proved to be a lasting success and has been praised for its psychological depth. The present arrangement includes all music, but the sung text is omitted (except for a few cue-like passages), as is the spoken dialog.
