She published several books, most notably the autobiography \u003ci\u003eGypsy: A Memoir \u003c\/i\u003e(1957), which became the basis of the Broadway musical \u003ci\u003eGypsy: A Musical Fable\u003c\/i\u003e two years later. \u003ci\u003eThe G-String Murders\u003c\/i\u003e, which has been suspected to be ghostwritten, was her first book. While not autobiographical in the strict sense, its main character shares her name and profession with the author.
