Lee, Gypsy Rose. (1911–1970). "The G-String Murders" - Signed Book Title Page.

Signed title of Gypsy Rose Lee, The G-String Murders, sixth printing (Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, 1943). Cut from book. Inscribed "To Paul / Greetings / Gypsy Rose Lee." 8 x 5 inches (20.3 x 12.5 cm). Browned and upper right corner creased; in very good condition.

After unsuccessful attempts at acting, the Canadian-born Lee achieved lasting fame as a burlesque dancer and striptease artist. She published several books, most notably the autobiography Gypsy: A Memoir (1957), which became the basis of the Broadway musical Gypsy: A Musical Fable two years later. The G-String Murders, which has been suspected to be ghostwritten, was her first book. While not autobiographical in the strict sense, its main character shares her name and profession with the author. It was also made into a film, Lady of Burlesque (1943), which is very much bowdlerized.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
