Calligraphic album with numerous alphabetically ordered quotations in German from diaries and letters of mostly German and Austrian composers (list on fol.3r is not exhaustive) and also about them. This "volume 1" covers the letters A to M. 72 unpaginated leaves; writing to recto and verso pages. "Ende des ersten Bandes" (End of first volume) to foot of final page.Titling in Fraktur; body text (quotations and credits) in italics (not cursive). Padded boards covered in decorative coarse fabric. 7.25 x 5.5 inches (18.4 x 14.2 cm). Some pages (especially the list of composers, fol.2r) blurred. Otherwise in fine condition. There is no trace of the second volume.

An attractive, intriguing piece of calligraphy from after 1913 (there are quotations from Richard Specht's book on Gustav Mahler, published in that year). The calligrapher remains anonymous. From the collection of American composer George Perle.
