Roosevelt, Franklin D. (1882–1945) [Merman, Ethel. (1908–1984)]. Signed Photograph Inscribed to Ethel Merman. Original Harris & Ewing gelatin silver portrait of a seated Franklin Roosevelt, inscribed below the image "For Ethel Merman from Franklin Roosevelt." 8 1/4 x 10 inches (21 x 26 cm). The photographer's raised stamp lower left, light silvering, in fine condition overall.  Originally acquired at the auction "Property from the Estate of Ethel Merman," sold Christie's East, 10 October 1984, lot 86.

The American actress and singer known for her distinctive, powerful voice and leading roles in musical theatre campaigned for Roosevelt's reelection in 1944. Joining such stars as Frank Sinatra and Moss Hart, she sang in radio broadcasts and promoted the Democrat, already serving an unprecedented third term as President of the US, who was seeking a fourth.  The present photograph was likely signed around this time and is a wonderful association between President Franklin Roosevelt and the Broadway legend.
