[Ballets Russes] Massine, Léonide. (1896-1979). Bold Autograph Signature and Portrait Print. On a card, 12 x10 cms, the great dancer/choreographer has signed "Leonide Massine." Card has been mounted on top of a superb print of a 1926 drawing by M. Vernarra, showing Massine dancing in Fokine's 1910 "Carnaval." Overall 32.5 x 25 cms. The verso features a similar portrait of Ninon Vallin with a facsimile signature.
From 1915 to 1921 he was the principal choreographer of the Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and after the departure of Vaslav Nijinsky, Massine became the preeminent male star and took over Nijinsky's roles. When Diaghilev died, Massine helped revitalize the world of ballet by his involvement with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
