Schindler, Anton Felix. (1795–1864) [Beethoven, Ludwig van. (1770–1827)] . [6] Lieder und Gesänge für eine Singstimme mit Begleitung des Pianoforte – INSCRIBED. Bonn: F.J. Mompour. [1839]. First edition.

Lieder und Gesänge [...] für eine Singstimme mit Begleitung des Pianoforte: 3=tes Liederheft / in Musik gesetzt und dem Fräulein Angelica Lueder hochachtungsvoll gewidmet von A. Schindler. [PN] 246. Engraved; title lithographed.  Oblong folio, 13.5 x 10.75 inches (34 x 27 cm). 21 pp. Autograph inscription to title: "À Madame et Mademoiselle de Montigny à Paris par A. Schindler." No date.Original dark blue wrappers; upper wrapper duplicates title page, with text in gilt.

Contains six songs: "Oft in stiller Mitternacht" (Thomas Moore, trans. Karl Christ); Sängers Glück ("In die Saiten greif' ich kühn," text not credited); Der Lockende ("Willst komme zur Laube," after Thomas Moore, trans. Ferdinand Freiligrath); Liebe und Treue ("Mein Herz ist schwer," after Robert Burns, by Freiligrath); Bescheidener Wunsch ("Hätt' ich, was ich oft verlangte," M. Bresser); Publisher's catalog, Neue Musikalien im Verlag bei F. J. Mompour in Bonn 1838, to final page [22]. The present edition is not listed in the catalog, suggesting that it was not yet available in 1838; it was first announced in Hofmeister XIX (May 1839).

Anton Schindler is best known for his association with Ludwig van Beethoven, whose secretary he was from 1822, and for his biography—the first ever—of Beethoven, published in 1840 and expanded in 1860. But he was a composer in his own right. Three collections of songs by Schindler were published in his lifetime, of which this was the last. Autograph material of any kind is very uncommon: in over 40 years of records, we have traced but one autograph item from him at auction (Christie's, 2014) and only a handful in dealer catalogues.
