Just twenty-two, he was the most talked-about performer on the bill, drew the largest crowds and sang on every day of the festival. On the opening night, before some 13,000 people, he performed "With God on Our Side," "Only a Pawn in Their Game," "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," then led the finale of "Blowin' in the Wind," joined on stage by Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel and the Freedom Singers of Albany, Georgia, before the whole company linked arms to close the night with "We Shall Overcome," the anthem of the civil rights movement. Over the weekend he also sang "Masters of War," "North Country Blues" and "Who Killed Davey Moore?" at the daytime workshops, and joined Baez for "With God on Our Side" in her Sunday evening set, a landmark in their celebrated partnership. Local record shops sold out of his albums within days. A month later he sang at the March on Washington; two years later, on the same stage, he would famously go electric.

Bill Lee (1928–2023) was the father of filmmaker Spike Lee and screenwriter Joie Lee, and composed original music for many of his son's films, including She's Gotta Have It (1986), School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989) and Mo' Better Blues (1990).
