[Apartheid] Tutu, Desmond. (1931–2021). T-Shirt Worn during a 1989 Protest on a Whites-Only Beach, with Typed Note Signed.
Two remarkable items from the South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. Included: a soft blue “Just Call Me Arch” T-shirt worn by Tutu when he jogged at a Whites-only beach at the Strand in South Africa in 1989 as church organizations continued their campaign of defiance against apartheid laws. The shirt, made by Duck Shop of Italy, was publicly displayed and now features mounting remnants to the backside. Also included is a typed note, signed in blue ballpoint, “God bless you, Desmond Tutu, 21. 6. 96,” one page, 6 x 4, personal stationery card, in full: “Now we are free, black and white together—the rainbow people of God. Thank you for supporting our struggle.” The note is mounted to an overall size of 9 x 7.5. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a photo of Tutu wearing the offered shirt.
