[Gender] [Anonymous] . Important Archive of Self-Portrait Photographs exploring Gender Identity.
An intriguing and moving archive of 199 experimental self-portrait photographs and one negative by an anonymous, likely French, photographer, ca. 1923-1938. Contained in three albums, dated ca. 1923-1938, these photographs were seemingly prepared for private, solitary reflection. The figure, who from the context we can speculate was likely assigned male at birth, appears in these photographs dressing and undressing, apparently over a long period of time, with many of the images showing them in undergarments and bloomers, sometimes in other traditionally female dress. These poses seem to be an attempt to document and comprehend an identity that may have been difficult or impossible to openly acknowledge in the context of the small French towns and communes whose names are occasionally recorded with the dates on some album pages. Indeed, in the earliest of the albums, the figure’s face is in most images heavily crossed out in ink, likely an attempt to protect the identity of the subject in case of discovery. Gelatin silver prints, measuring 1.5 x 2.5 inches, to 8 x 10 inches (3.81x6.35 to 20.32x25.4 cm.), mounted recto/verso, some images with a date written in ink below the image. Oblong 4tos, variant cloth and board covers, two with a notation R.F. and a number on the cover, one with the notation "Le Verger Le Dauphin, la Dauphine & L'Heritier 9/34" on the last page in white ink; tied bindings. Overall in fine condition.
