Sonja Henie was a Norwegian figure skater and film actor whose career included major achievements in both athletics and entertainment. She became one of the most decorated figure skaters of the 20th century before transitioning to Hollywood films in the late 1930s.
Henie began skating in childhood and trained intensively under Norwegian and international coaches. She won her first Norwegian national championship at age 10. At the 1924 Winter Olympics she was the youngest competitor in the figure skating field. Henie went on to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in women’s singles (1928, 1932, 1936), ten World Figure Skating Championships (1927–1936), and six European Championships (1931–1936). Her competitive career concluded after the 1936 Olympic Games.
Following her retirement from amateur competition, Henie signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox and entered the film industry.
