Taylor, Elizabeth. (1932-2011) & Hilton, Conrad "Nicky". (1926-1969). Original Candid Photograph from the day of their wedding.
Rare original candid photograph from the wedding of 18-year-old Elizabeth Taylor to 24-year-old socialite and hotel heir Conrad "Nicky" Hilton on May 6, 1950 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. The couple are looking directly into the camera, and one of the entrance arches of the church can be seen behind Nicky. Three surface creases, overall in fine condition. 2.5 x 3.5 inches (6.4 x 8.9 cm.).
Taylor's first of seven marriages was the wedding of the year. Much was made of the engagement ring, a 4 carat diamond set in platinum which cost the equivalent of $105,000 in today's money. MGM gifted their veteran star with a wedding dress designed by Helen Rose, and there were over 700 guests at the ceremony, including Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Spencer Tracy, and Gene Kelly. The couple honeymooned for three months, but by December of that year Taylor had already moved out, and they were divorced in January of 1951.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
