Piccagliani was the official photographer of the Teatro alla Scala for some three decades from the late 1940s, and his images of Callas in the house's productions of the 1950s are among the best-known photographs of the soprano. Callas sang Imogene in Bellini's Il pirata at La Scala in May 1958.
