Solti, Georg. (1912–1997). Signed Photograph.
Signed photograph of the great Hungarian-British conductor, who has inscribed "To Paul / Solti" to the lower portion of the image. The conductor is likely shown in a recording session of Mahler's 1st Symphony and the close-up nature of the photograph, combined with Solti's crouched position and animated expression, gives this image a particular striking and intimate quality.  "London Symphony Orchestra" stamp to verso.  In fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

The present photograph appears on the cover of the Decca Legends 1964 Legendary Performances re-release of Solti's Mahler 1 recording with the London Symphony.  When it first appeared on LP in  1964, it represented one of the first modern era stereo Mahler recordings to appear following the start of the Mahler "boom."

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
