Motherwell, Robert. (1915–1991) [Rothschild, Baron Philippe de. (1902–1988)]. 1974 Château Mouton Rothschild Label – SIGNED. Original 1974 Château Mouton Rothschild bottle label, designed that year by the American artist, who has signed "R Motherwell" in blue ink.  The label is reminiscent of Motherwell's celebrated Elegies series from the period.  In very fine condition.  3.8 x 5.75 inches (9.6 x 14.6 cm.).

Beginning in 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild invited artist Jean Carlu to create a painting for Château Mouton's label, with the hope of establishing an annual tradition which would feature designs by famous artists of the day.  In 1946, this became a permanent and significant aspect of the Mouton image with labels created by some of the world's great painters and sculptors.  The popularity of the label images results in auction prices for older and more collectible years being far out of sync with the other first growths, whose labels do not change year to year.  Miró's design is one of many in an impressive list of featured artists between 1945–2015, including Cocteau, Masson, Dalí, Chagall, Kandinsky, Motherwell, Warhol, Picasso, Haring, and others.
