He had recently begun to find success as a television director and was reluctant to return to the stage, but upon reading the script he found himself fascinated by the character of the King and was eager to perform in the project.  His role as King Mongkut in \u003ci style=\"\"\u003eThe King and I\u003c\/i\u003e became the defining role of his career.  He appeared in the original 1951 production and later touring productions, the 1956 film adaptation, a 1977 Broadway revival, a London production in 1979, and another Broadway revival in 1985.
