Brynner, Yul. (1920–1985). "The King and I" - Signed Photograph.
Boldly signed doubleweight photograph of the Russian-American actor onstage in his most famous role, the King of Siam in Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I.  An excellent example of his signature.  Significant diagonal crease to upper left corner, else in fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

Brynner auditioned for Rodgers and Hammerstein's new musical in 1950 at the urging of Mary Martin.  He had recently begun to find success as a television director and was reluctant to return to the stage, but upon reading the script he found himself fascinated by the character of the King and was eager to perform in the project.  His role as King Mongkut in The King and I became the defining role of his career.  He appeared in the original 1951 production and later touring productions, the 1956 film adaptation, a 1977 Broadway revival, a London production in 1979, and another Broadway revival in 1985.  He won two Tony Awards and an Academy Award for Best Actor for the part, which he performed onstage a staggering 4,625 times during his life.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
