Nagrin, Daniel. (1917–2008). Signed Photograph of the Modern Dance Pioneer.

Signed double-weight photograph of the American modern dancer and choreographer, shown in a striking dance action portrait in theatrical makeup. The production in which he appears is unknown to us, and though reproduced on their website, the Daniel Nagrin Theater, Film, and Dance Foundation likewise does not credit the image. Inscribed, "To Paul– / Daniel Nagrin" in black ink to the lower right corner. Very fine. 8 x 10 inches; 20.3 x 25.4 cm. Uncommon.

Nagrin was a leading figure in American modern dance, celebrated for his solo works such as Strange Hero (1948); he also danced on Broadway and was married to the choreographer Helen Tamiris.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon's stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy's Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
