Morris, Mark. (b. 1956). "O Rangasayee" - Signed Photograph.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
Signed original Lois Greenfield photograph of the American dancer and choreographer in a performance of his 1984 solo dance work O Rangasayee. Morris has inscribed "For Paul w/ love, / Mark Morris." In fine condition, signed and titled by the photographer to verso. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).
When Morris programmed his 1984 solo dance for the Sounds of India series at the 2016 White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, Jeff Seroy wrote, "Part of the genius of O Rangasayee is that it returns one of the oldest and hoariest of modern dance tropes—the exotic Eastern solo of Denishawn days—to its primal roots in the ecstatic. This layering of homages both to antique and modern dance sources characterizes other of Morris’s greatest work. But, like the headwaters of the Ganges, nowhere else is it as bracingly clear and pure as here. Morris by now has a substantial history of rich engagement with India and Indian dance forms, and was thus the ideal choice to curate this festival. But this powerfully transporting youthful work preceded all his visits and studies and lengthy stays. That O Rangasayee distilled something so essential so early, and with such brilliance, may be an argument in favor of reincarnation. It is a dancer’s credo." ("O Rangasayee," The Paris Review, November 8, 2016)
