Signed Fernand de Gueldre of Chicago doubleweight photograph of the great German soprano, who has inscribed "To my dear Charlie / most cordially / Elisabeth Rethberg / 1927." Light wear to lower left corner, else very fine. 8 x 10 inches; 20.3 x 25.4 cm.
Rethberg made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Aida in 1922 and sang with the company for twenty seasons, becoming one of its most admired sopranos in both the Italian and German repertoire; in 1928 she created the title role in Richard Strauss's Die ägyptische Helena in Dresden. The recipient, Charles Drumheller, tenor and longtime rehearsal pianist at the Metropolitan and Chicago Lyric Opera, received inscribed photographs from many of the leading singers of the day; Rethberg had inscribed another photograph to him the year before.
