Roger, Gustave-Hippolyte. (1815–1879) [Fiorentino, Pier Angelo. (1811–1864)]. Autograph Letter Signed regarding the Opéra-Comique.

ALS from the French tenor to his dear friend, the Italian author and journalist Pier Angelo Fiorentino, asking him to use his influence with Opéra-Comique director Émile Perrin to release the soprano Delphine Ugalde to sing in a concert organized by Delaporte on 14 March, at which Roger himself was to appear. 1st March, 1852; 2 pp. In full (translated from the French): "My dear Fiorentino / You can do me a kind service, and a very great one to one of my oldest friends, by using your legitimate influence with Perrin to persuade him to grant Madame Ugalde to Delaporte, who is organizing a concert on 14 March, a concert at which I am delighted to sing. Roqueplan, on the recommendation of M. Drouin de l'Huys [sic, i.e. Drouyn de Lhuys], has granted me permission; we suppose, rightly, that you have with the Director of the Opéra-Comique the influence of any Vice-President of the Conseil d'État. As for your kindness, one does not suppose it, one knows it; so you will do, my dear friend, what you can to oblige us, and if we are bothering you, you will have only yourself to blame, for your well-known reputation for obligingness and your friendship for your most affectionate / G. Roger / 1st March – 52." Nestor Roqueplan was then director of the Opéra, where Roger was engaged; Ugalde was a leading soprano of the Opéra-Comique under Perrin. Light areas of spotting, else fine. 5 x 8 inches; 12.7 x 20.3 cm.

Roger debuted in 1838 as Georges in Halévy's L'éclair. Roles were created for him by Halévy, Auber, Meyerbeer, Berlioz and Thomas. Among others, he was the first Jean de Leyde in Le Prophète and Faust in the 1846 concert version of La Damnation de Faust. He toured Germany several times, partnered often with Jenny Lind and Pauline Viardot, and was a popular friend of French musicians and literary figures. In 1859 he lost his right arm in a shooting accident, after which he appeared on stage with a mechanical arm.
