Thiebaud, Wayne. (1920-2021). Signed Photograph.
Handsome original 1987 photograph of the American artist, who has signed "Thiebaud 2015" to the lower margin, adding at left a bright red drawing of a heart. A National Museum of American Art label for the institution's 1992–1993 'Vision and Revision: The Hand-Colored Prints of Wayne Thiebaud' exhibition is affixed to verso. Moderate toning to margins, else in fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).
Best known for his luscious paintings of pies, ice-cream cones and gumball machines, California artist Wayne Thiebaud has been an avid and prolific draftsman since he began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist. Associated with Pop art because of his interest in objects of mass culture, he endows even the most banal, everyday scenes with a sense of poetry and nostalgia. His early works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists like Warhol, Oldenburg and Lichtenstein, suggesting that Thiebaud may have had an influence on the movement.
