Born in Budapest, Sándor studied under Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály at the Liszt Academy. His relationship with Bartók would continue for the rest of the composer's life; Sándor premiered two of Bartók's works, including the Piano Concerto No. 3, and was one of only ten people who attended the influential Hungarian composer's funeral.
