Terrasse, Claude. (1867–1923) [Jacquet, H. Maurice. (1886–1954)]. "I hope we will have a resounding revenge soon" - Autograph Letter Signed to H. Maurice Jacquet.

ALS from the French operetta composer to the composer and conductor H. Maurice Jacquet, commiserating over a setback the two had shared, thanking Jacquet for all the trouble he had taken, and promising good news for the future. Hauteville (Ain), 27 May 1921; 1 p., on a lined letter-card, the integral address panel addressed to Jacquet at "La Sirène, 7 rue Pasquier, Paris VIIIe," with 25c Semeuse stamp and Hauteville postmarks. In full (translated from the French): "Hauteville (Ain), c/o M. Mège. / 27 May 1921. / My dear friend, / I am sorrier for you than for myself. I am infinitely grateful to you for all the trouble you have taken. We have been through a very bad moment, but I hope we will have a resounding revenge soon. I have good news for the future, which I will tell you about as soon as I return, sometime next week. If you have anything interesting to tell me, write to me at the address above. And the Gaîté?... / Warmest regards to you both. / Ever yours, / Claude Terrasse." La Sirène was the Paris publishing house founded by Paul Laffitte in 1917, whose music list (La Sirène musicale) issued Jacquet's Aux jardins de Murcie in 1919 and his Cantique à l'ancienne for harp in 1920; writing to him there suggests Jacquet was then working with the firm. "La Gaîté" is presumably the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Lyrique, one of the principal Paris houses for operetta, and Terrasse's closing question may refer to a production the two had in hand there. Two holes punched to upper margin, expected mailing fold, else fine. 5.5 x 7.75 inches; 14 x 19.7 cm.

Terrasse wrote the music for Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi (1896) and became one of the leading composers of Belle Époque operetta, with works including Les travaux d'Hercule (1901) and Le sire de Vergy (1903). He was the brother-in-law of the painter Pierre Bonnard, having married Bonnard's sister Andrée in 1890. Bonnard illustrated Terrasse's Petit solfège illustré (1893) and Petites scènes familières, joined him and Jarry in the puppet Théâtre des Pantins, and painted the Terrasse family on several occasions.

Original French: "Hauteville (Ain) chez Mr Mège. / 27 Mai 1921. / Mon cher Ami, / Je suis plus désolé pour vous que pour moi – Je vous sais un gré infini de tout le mal que vous vous êtes donné. Nous avons passé par un bien mauvais moment, mais j'espère que nous aurons une revanche prochaine et éclatante. J'ai de bonnes nouvelles pour l'avenir dont je vous entretiendrai dès mon retour qui aura lieu dans le courant de la prochaine semaine. – Si vous avez q.q. chose d'intéressant à me dire, écrivez moi à l'adresse ci-dessus. Et la Gaîté?... / Bien cordialement à vous deux. / Tout vôtre. / Claude Terrasse."
