Richter, Sviatoslav. (1915–1997) & Fischer-Dieskau, Dietrich. (1925–2012). Original Photograph.
Original Siegfried Lauterwasser doubleweight photograph of the Russian pianist and German baritone, two of the preeminent musicians of their day, in conversation. Whether the photograph was taken at an informal gathering or a post-performance or recording reception is unclear, but numerous bottles of Coca-Cola and champagne can be seen on a table in the background. Photographer's stamp to verso. In fine condition. 9.5 x 7 inches (24 x 18 cm.).
Richter and Fischer-Dieskau had a long if infrequent partnership. "The 1970s had seen this unique partnership record the great Brahms Die schone Magelone of 1970 and the 1973 Wolf Morike Lieder: Fischer-Dieskau, praising the 'unapproachable, straightforward beauty' of Richter's playing, must always have felt keenly aware of the challenge it set his own word-intoxicated artistry." (Gramophone) The praise and esteem went both ways: Richter wrote in his notebooks that Fischer-Dieskau was "the greatest of 20th-century singers."
