Ravel, Maurice. (1875-1937). Chansons madécasses. Traduites en Francais par Evariste Parny.. Paris: Durand. 1926. First edition of the piano and vocal score.. Dedication; 1-17. [PN] 10,973 (b). Each of the three songs with a superb woodcut vignette on the first page. In excellent condition in a glassine jacket.

Ravel describes his Chansons madécasses, commissioned by and dedicated to Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, as seeming to him "to introduce something new, dramatic - indeed erotic - arising from the subject matter of Parny's poem. It is a sort of quartet where the voice is the principal instrument. Simplicity dominates." (Gerald Larner, Maurice Ravel, p. 189).
