Original vintage Russian postcard photograph of the playwright reading one of his plays (The Seagull) to the actors of the Moscow Art Theatre. The entire company, which would have an enormous impact on naturalism in the American theatre over the course of the early 20th century, is identified by name along the lower margin. Adhesive remnants from previous mount to each corner of the recto and slight wear to the corners. Light silvering to image and two spots of toning, else fine. 5.5 x 3.5 inches; 14 x 8.9 cm.
The famous photograph was taken in Moscow in May 1899, when Chekhov read The Seagull to the company; among those pictured are Konstantin Stanislavski, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, Vsevolod Meyerhold and Olga Knipper, whom Chekhov would marry in 1901.
