Tillmans, Wolfgang. (b. 1968). "JAL (1997)" - Oversized Exhibition Printer's Proof.
Oversized exhibition printer's proof outside of the edition of JAL (1997) from the installation If One Thing Matters, Everything Matters, installation room 2, 1995-1997. Unsigned, printed on large photo paper rather than the customary metal. Framed behind archival glass.  45 x 60 inches (114.3 x 152.4 cm.).

The title of the exhibition conveys Tillmans’s desire that all his photographs be seen as equally significant.  He suggests that an image of a cup of coffee, for example, carries weight and importance equal to a photograph of more dramatic subject matter.  He questions conventional codes of representation and, in so doing, reinvigorates the genres of still life, landscape and portraiture.  His images may appear artless and improvised but Tillmans knowingly adopts a ‘language of authenticity’ and many of them are carefully staged.
