Gerle studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music prior to World War II.  A Hungarian Jew, he fled a labor camp in 1945, and eventually made his way to the United States.  Along with his wife, the pianist Marilyn Neeley, he received an Emmy Award in 1970 for performances of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas.
