Capoul, Victor. (1839 - 1924). Costume Cabinet Photograph, "Fra Diavolo." . A superb image of the great French tenor, creator of Offenbach's Vert-Vert and Masse's Paul et Virginie. He is shown in the title-role of Auber's "Fra Diavolo," the role he performed in his 1877 Covent Garden debut. Edith Wharton describes him in a perfomance of Faust at the Metropolitan (with Christine Nilsson) in the first chapter of The Age of Innocence, "vainly trying, in a tight purple velvet doublet and plumed cap, to look as pure and true as his artless victim."
