Rudolf Mengelberg was appointed artistic director of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1925, becoming general director ten years later. In addition to his work as a conductor, he was a composer and musicologist.

The great conductor Pierre Monteux was known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony.
