The production was troubled from the beginning, with an overworked Davis collapsing during the first song on opening night of the out-of-town tryout in Detroit.  After being revived, Davis turned to the audience and said, \"Well, you can't say I didn't fall for you!\"  Unkind reviews followed the show through tryouts in Pittsburgh and Boston, and extensive revisions were made throughout.  Songs were cut, added, or rearranged, skits were replaced, and other roles were recast.  Even the Broadway debut had to be postponed by 11 days when Davis was bedridden due to exhaustion.
