Rare signed photograph of the noted cellist, who has inscribed "To dear George/ Beloved friend and great artist/ Affectionately/ Zara." Very light vertical crease to right side, else in fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

The Canadian-born and London-trained cellist was a prodigy helped as child by Barbirolli and Casals, who taught her. At 14, she made both her London recital debut and first orchestra appearance under Sargent. 1942 saw her NYC recital debut. She lived in London for a period and introduced many modern works by Barber, Hindemith, Shostakovich , Bloch etc. In 1955 she became an American citizen and was very active in the US as performer, recording and as a teacher at Juilliard. She was the first American cellist to perform in the USSR and concertized and recorded with the pianist Grant Johannesen, to whom she was married from 1966 to 1973. She recorded both Bloch's Schelomo & Barber's Cello Concerto under the respective batons of the composers.

From the collection of George Gaber (1916–2007), noted percussionist who performed with a number of professional ensembles, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Baltimore Symphony and worked with Leonard Bernstein, Otto Klemperer, Igor Stravinsky, Henry Mancini, Duke Ellington and many others over the span of his career. From 1960 to 1986 taught percussion at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and was also an artist in residence at Carnegie Mellon University, an adjudicator for National Music Arts in Japan and the Canadian Music Competition, and a Hall of Fame recipient in Percussion Arts Society.
