He was the son of Joseph Hopkinson and Emily Mifflin (daughter of Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Mifflin and Sarah Morris), Grandson of Francis Hopkinson (lawyer, writer, musician and patriot who signed the Declaration of Independence) and Nancy \"Ann\" Borden (daughter of Joseph Borden and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eElizabeth Rogers) and was Great Grandson of\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"\"\u003eThomas Hopkinson and Mary Johnson.
